When traveling to Venezuela, a must-visit recommendation is undoubtedly Canaima and Angel Falls. To fully enjoy this remarkable destination, organizing your trip through a tour is highly advisable. This will alleviate the stress of managing accommodations and transportation in this remote and rugged region.
Getting to Canaima
Before heading to Canaima, it is worth knowing a little about this remarkable destination. Located in southeastern Venezuela, Canaima is a vast national park known for its dramatic tepuis, lush rainforest, rivers, and spectacular waterfalls. It is also home to Angel Falls, the world’s highest uninterrupted waterfall, making Canaima one of Venezuela’s most extraordinary natural destinations.
I reached Canaima by taking a flight from Puerto Ordaz. The flight took about 1.5 hours on a small plane with around 20 passengers. The journey itself was an interesting part of the experience, as we flew over the remote landscapes of southern Venezuela.
When I arrived in Canaima, I checked into my hotel and took some time to rest before beginning my exploration. After settling in, I was ready to discover Canaima’s spectacular waterfalls and the surrounding natural landscapes.
A Tour in Canaima
After checking into my hotel and taking some time to rest, I joined an afternoon tour to explore Canaima. It turned out to be one of the highlights of my time in Venezuela. We started by traveling by boat across the lagoon, surrounded by the dramatic landscapes of Canaima. From there, we continued on foot into the interior, walking through the forest and stopping at several waterfalls and natural pools where we could swim.
On our way back, the weather suddenly changed and we were caught in the rain. But rather than ruining the experience, it made the adventure even more memorable. Getting wet, walking through the rainforest, swimming in the waterfalls, and traveling by boat through such a remote landscape made me feel completely immersed in Canaima’s wild beauty. If you visit Canaima, I highly recommend taking this tour; it was an experience I would not want to miss.

Tips for the Canaima Tour
- Expect to Get Wet: You will pass under waterfalls and enter natural lakes, so be prepared to get wet. Pack a swimsuit.
- Wear Socks: For safety and hygiene, wear socks while walking around the waterfalls. Bring an extra pair.
- Protect Electronics: Use a waterproof pack for your camera, smartphone, and other electronics.
- Prepare for Rain: Bring a raincoat (not an umbrella) as sudden rains are common.
- Bring a Light Source: Due to early darkness during rain, carry a small light with you.
- Pack Spare Clothes: For the next day’s Angel Falls trip, ensure you have dry clothes as there may not be enough time to dry wet ones.
Visiting Angel Falls
The next day, your Angel Falls tour usually begins at 5:30 AM. You’ll first take a 20-minute bus ride to the river, followed by a 5.5-hour journey involving a boat trip, walking, and climbing. The boat trip is quite enjoyable. Even though the rivers aren’t very deep, maneuvering through occasional rough and opposing currents can be thrilling. But don’t afraid highly skilled. While traveling with the boats, you encounter many beautiful landscapes, so be ready to take lots of photos. Upon reaching Angel Falls, the world’s highest waterfall at about 1 km long, you can swim in the lake at its base.

Before setting off, it is worth knowing a little about Angel Falls. Located in Venezuela’s Canaima National Park, Angel Falls is the world’s highest uninterrupted waterfall, plunging approximately 979 meters from the Auyán-Tepui plateau. Reaching the falls is an adventure in itself, involving a boat ride, hiking, and climbing through the rainforest.
After spending about an hour there, you can choose to either camp by the river or return to the hotel. I opted for camping. The camp is in the forest and features basic facilities: no doors, windows, or beds, but hammocks for sleeping. Meals are simple but sufficient. While I didn’t experience mosquito issues, it’s wise to prepare for them. Check with your tour company for specific details before booking.

Tips for the Angel Falls Adventure
- Prepare for Getting Wet: Expect to get wet during the river trip; dress accordingly (e.g., raincoat).
- Bring Mosquito Repellent: Essential for the forested area.
- Stay Hydrated: Carry water for the climb and walk.
- Dress Comfortably: Wear appropriate clothing for climbing and hot weather.
- Pack a Light: If camping, a small light can be useful at night.
- Bring Flip Flops: Handy for the lake and wet conditions.
- Swim Gear: Pack a swimsuit and towel if you plan to swim in the lake.
- Check Your Camera: Ensure your camera has enough battery and storage space.
