My time spent in Vancouver, where the Pacific coast meets a perfect blend of nature and modern city life, offered far more than I had anticipated across different visits. During these short trips, I had the chance to explore various corners of the city and savor unforgettable flavors at different restaurants. While experiencing the relaxing comfort of my hotel, I also had the opportunity to observe the vibrant energy of the city firsthand. In this post, I’ll be sharing my personal notes on the essence of Vancouver.
Creating a “must-see” list for Vancouver is no easy task. The city is home to so many diverse and beautiful attractions that no matter how long a list I prepare, something will inevitably be left out. Therefore, you can think of what you are about to read as a “capsule guide” to exploring Vancouver.
Vancouver ’s Most Charming Corner: Kitsilano
Kitsilano (or “Kits” as the locals call it) became one of my favorite spots in Vancouver. This neighborhood is truly the crown jewel of the city, where you can feel both a sophisticated and laid-back vibe at the same time. Walking along Kitsilano Beach with the gentle, cool breeze of the ocean is a joy in itself. People sunbathing on the sand, playing volleyball, cycling, or just soaking up the view from the benches… the atmosphere is incredibly vibrant yet remarkably peaceful.
As you head into the backstreets, a completely different atmosphere unfolds. Specifically, West 4th Avenue is one of the city’s trendiest spots, filled with boutique shops, yoga studios, and cozy cafes. The goal here isn’t just to sightsee; it’s to slow down, grab a coffee, and embrace that “chill” vibe.
One of my favorite things about Kitsilano was the scenery. Watching the Vancouver skyline and the North Shore Mountains from here was a true highlight. Additionally, cultural landmarks in the area like the Museum of Vancouver, the Vancouver Maritime Museum, and the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre make the visit even more enriching.
If you want to slow down, feel the local life, and experience Vancouver’s energy at a more relaxed pace, be sure to put Kitsilano at the top of your list.
The City’s Iconic Signature: Canada Place and Coal Harbour
As one of Vancouver’s most recognizable landmarks, Canada Place is the ideal stop to discover the city’s modern face and the impressive skyline that stretches along the waterfront. With its unique roof resembling white sails, Canada Place is a special vantage point that brings together massive cruise ships docking at the pier, seaplanes taking off, and the captivating views of the inlet all in one spot.
What made the Coal Harbour area unforgettable for me was the atmosphere it offered. As you walk along the shoreline, the energy of city life accompanies you on one side, while the tranquility of the water stays with you on the other; the sight of the North Shore Mountains rising in the distance perfectly completes this experience. Encountering details representing different regions of Canada throughout the walk makes the exploration even more meaningful and enjoyable.
The Gastown Steam Clock
Walking through the cobblestone streets of Gastown in Vancouver’s characteristically rainy weather, seeing that famous white steam rising through the mist felt like a true breath of the Victorian era. Designed by Raymond Saunders in 1977, this iconic Gastown Steam Clock is one of the rare mechanical marvels in the world, powered by the city’s central steam system. Standing tall on the wet pavement, this brass and glass giant greets passersby every quarter hour by playing the Westminster chimes with its five different whistles.

Watching the clock, you aren’t just looking at a timepiece; you are witnessing a point where engineering meets art. Although an electric motor was later added to improve its precision over time, the thick clouds of steam it puffs toward the sky at the top of every hour still evoke that old industrial power.
Head to Lower Lonsdale on a Sunny Day in Vancouver
No matter which side of the city you are on, the moment you catch a sunny day, make your way straight to Lower Lonsdale. Located at the southernmost point of North Vancouver, this vibrant seaside district is easily accessible by car or via a scenic sea-bus ride.
The area is buzzing with energy, home to a wide array of restaurants, art galleries, cozy cafes, and plenty of open public spaces. If the weather is nice, there’s a very high chance you’ll stumble upon a live concert or a local event. You can spend your time browsing the Lonsdale Quay Market, or perhaps settle in around Wallace Mews to enjoy a delicious meal and a glass of fine wine while soaking up the stunning waterfront views.
The Green Heart of the City: Stanley Park
Stretching like a lush oasis in the core of Vancouver, Stanley Park offers an endless expanse of greenery just steps away from the city’s towering skyscrapers. As we walked along the Seawall, the scenic coastal path surrounding this massive peninsula, we were accompanied by the tranquil waters of the Pacific on one side and centuries-old trees on the other. It is truly a place where time seems to flow with a unique sense of peace.
Venturing deeper into the park, we encountered the magnificent Totem Poles, which carry the profound traces of the indigenous cultures that have long inhabited these lands. With their intricate carvings and towering presence, these totems are a powerful testament to the region’s rich heritage. While we couldn’t explore every single corner of the park, we crowned our visit at Prospect Point, the highest point in Stanley Park, offering a breathtaking view looking out toward the iconic Lions Gate Bridge.
Childlike Joy on the Tracks: Burnaby Central Railway
During our Vancouver trip, we discovered one of the city’s most charming hidden gems, where both children and those who are young at heart will be absolutely delighted: Burnaby Central Railway. Riding on top of these miniature trains and feeling the breeze on our faces was a truly joyful and fun experience. The nostalgic sound of the whistles as the trains passed and the surprisingly satisfying speed turned this outing into a real railway adventure.
After completing the impressively long and scenic loop, spending some time in the area where the mini model trains are displayed was just as relaxing. At only $5 per ticket, the price is surprisingly affordable compared to the sheer happiness it provides. Especially on a sunny day, this budget-friendly activity is a must-add to your Vancouver itinerary for a day filled with laughter.
Where to Stay in Vancouver: A Home Comfort in the Heart of the City
Vancouver offers a dazzling variety of accommodation options, and choosing the “right” one among so many alternatives can sometimes be a challenge. Our priority for this trip was to be in a central location where we could dive into the city’s energy the moment we stepped out—within walking distance of restaurants, cafes, and shopping districts. Of course, comfort and parking facilities were also non-negotiable criteria for us.
Our search led us to Times Square Suites Hotel. The positive reviews across various platforms and the warm, friendly tone the hotel used in their communication with us confirmed that we had found the right place.

We stayed in a 1 Bedroom Suite at Times Square Hotel and Suites for two nights. The spaciousness that greeted us as we walked in felt more like a stylish city apartment than a standard hotel room. The suite featured a fully equipped kitchen with everything from a fridge and stove to a microwave and all necessary utensils—a huge plus for those who prefer to prepare their own meals. The living room was airy enough for even larger groups to relax comfortably.
Thanks to the street-facing windows, Vancouver’s endless energy fills the room, while the tiny balcony offers a wonderful little escape for a breath of fresh air. Additionally, the room was bathed in natural light throughout the day. Thoughtful details like the indoor fireplace, adjustable lighting, and fans elevated the entire stay experience.
For me, cleanliness is the most essential part of any stay. The fact that every corner of such a large suite was spotless, with crisp white linens and a pristine bathroom, truly deserves praise. Furthermore, from the reservation process to the moment we checked out, the staff’s friendly and solution-oriented communication made us feel right at home.
In conclusion, if you are wondering where to stay in Vancouver, Times Square Suites Hotel is a place I can wholeheartedly recommend for its central location, spacious and comfortable rooms, kitchen-suite options, and sincere service. Its location provides a massive advantage, especially for those who want to explore the city on foot. Click here to learn more about the hotel and make a booking!
